4-bit ruminations

Hello! 👋🏽

I'm Nimalan (or "Nim", as an easier short-form). My pronouns are he/him.

Many moons ago, I had a Geocities page and a six-digit ICQ number (this is a thing you should be impressed by). My Geocities page was garbage and my ICQ number got stolen by hackers. They shut down Geocities anyway, so my taste in marquee tags and tiled backgrounds made of various shades of orange is now lost to the ages.

In the years since then, my online identity has consisted of screaming into the void (AKA Twitter), standing around looking employable (AKA LinkedIn) and tinkering with code (AKA Github).

It's been fun, but I've been yearning for something more personal (like a Geocities page or perhaps a blog) and distinctive (like my six-digit ICQ number 😢). In the spirit of my old Geocities page, I decided that I'd build my own web site!

What will I find here?

Lately, I've been building a habit of writing. It has been a great way to understand what is happening deep within myself, to really extract the knowledge from non-fiction and to allow my curiosity to fuel some brain excursions.

I'm also currently taking some time off to figure out the next steps in my career, and I decided a couple of months ago to focus on tech for climate change mitigation and adaptation. I will soon start's Learning for Action course on climate change, where I will have the privilege of learning about this space with a cohort of like-minded individuals.

My professional background is in software engineering and machine learning, with a little bit of product management, and I am looking forward to figuring out how I can use my skills to contribute to what could potentially be an existential challenge for humanity.

On top of all of that, I enjoy cooking and eating, mountain biking (and more generally, biking where there are no cars) and I have the best dog ever, so there will be no shortage of things to write about!

What will it look like?

It will probably look like crap at first, because I do not really have UX, design or front-end development skills. It will probably also be lacking in features, e.g. if you want an RSS feed, let me know and I'll be floored that someone actually wants to subscribe 🤯.

I am planning to write some articles, but a free-standing article seems like a tall order right now. It takes a fair amount of bravery to write a whole article! Bravery that I am lacking for now 🦁.

On the other hand, I have been really interested in digital gardens for the past year or so, and have been using for most of my note-taking for the past year. I might start off by publishing parts of my digital garden. It will take a lot more code though 🤔.

It kind of boils down to whether I want to code more or force myself to write a free-standing article and get over my fear of putting my thoughts out there. I guess I'll make a choice soon enough.
